Pech / Bad luck
Quite recently on TMP forum, Billy Yank provided me with very interesting excerpt form a letter from James Stewart, a member of
Knapp's Pennsylvania Independent Battery E describing the situation at
Chancellorsville. It shows clearly that enemy actions weren't the only source of problems the artillery had to cope with.
"May 3rd [...]. No. 6
Gun had an axel broke and repaired. At 3AM we got orders from General
Hooker to move to the Right of the Army. No. 5 Gun broke down on the
road and was taken off the field. Got in position on the right of the
road with the 1st Corps. Built fortifications round our guns. Heavy
firing towards our left of musketry and soon the artillery opened. It
was the most exuberant firing of the war and lasted without
intermission for 4 1/2 hours and afterwards was slight firing all along
the line. Our loss was very heavy but the the enemy was heavier as we
were behind fortifications… I was ordered to the rear with No. 6 Gun to
get it repaired. Came back after night with No. 5 Gun mounted on our
carriage.
[...] May 6th. No. 1 gun bursted at [the] muzzle and was taken off [the field]."

Rebel yell
Ostatnio natknąłem się na bardzo ciekawy dokument. Smithsonian Institute zamieścił na YouTube film, nagrany w latach 30-tych XX wieku, na którym konfederaccy weterani odtwarzają swój słynny okrzyk bojowy - rebell yell.
Quite recently I've found very interesting document. Smithsonian Institute put on You Tube a documentary, recorded somewhere in 1930's, showing Confederate veterans performing their famous battle cry - the rebell yell.

Struktura dowodzenia cz.2 / Chain of command p.2
Bardzo szybko otrzymałem linka do niezwykle ciekawej książki: ESSAY OF THE ART OF WAR, wydanej w roku 1761.
To learn more about 18th century chain of command I started interesting discussion on TMP forum and on "Lace
Wars" Yahoo Group. I've got the link to very interesting book:
ESSAY OF THE ART OF WAR, from 1761. [link]
This is a bit later than WSS, but the book summarize the military doctrine of first half of 18th century.
On pages 29-36 one can learn about duties of different generals. It appeared that only lieutnant generals were independent commanders, while major general had supporting role only. His duty was to assist the lieutnant general, while during the battle he could command the part of his supperior's troops, especially if they were numerous.
So now I know.

Struktura dowodzenia / Chain of command

Czym dowodzili generałowie Erffa i Waldt ? Czy ich kompetencje się nie pokrywały.
I'm analyzing OOB for battle of Hochstadt and I'm trying to understand the chain of command in WSS. Let's take a closer look at Imperial army. Which units were under the command of lieutnant general Palffy, and which under major general Natzmer. Some OOBs found in the internet claim that Palffy commanded the whole wing of cavalry and Natzmer only it's first line (composed entirelly of Prussian regiments). But second line of horse is clearly under command of another lieutnant general - Stauffenberg. Why was he placed under the command of Palffy, general of equal rank ?
And infantry ? What were the competences of generals Erffa and Waldt ? Did they command the same units ?

French army is evern more puzzling. Let's look at dragoon brigade Fonbeasard. The higher command belongs to marechal de camp (equivalent of major general) de Marivaux, with lieutnant general de Lannion as senior commander. None of them commands any other troops. So this brigade is commanded by two generals, by two men with overlaping authorities. How did it work on the battlefield ? For what purpose three senior officers - two generals and brigadier were assigned to command only one brigade of no more than 1500 men ?
